Obituary for Charlie Thompson, Jr.

The Obituary of Charlie (Sonny) Thompson Jr.

Charlie Thompson, Jr., affectionately known to all as “Sonny”, was born on December 8, 1946 in Hemingway, South Carolina. He was the first of nine children born to the late Charlie Thompson, Sr. and Alberta Thompson. Sonny went home to be with the Lord early on Sunday, September 9, 2018.

Sonny received his early education in the public schools of Hemingway where he attended Chavis High School, graduating in the class of 1964. Shortly after graduation, Sonny relocated from South Carolina to Wilmington, Delaware. He was employed by the White Glove Car Wash (1965); the Wiltex Company (1965-1995); MBNA (1996-2006) and ABM (2006-2010); retiring in 2010.

Although they met shortly after he relocated to Delaware in 1965, it wasn’t until July 1, 1972, that Sonny married his loving wife of 46 years, Linda Mae Thompson. To that union was born three children; Corey Thompson, Lenesha Thompson Knight, and Charlie Thompson, III.

Sonny attended church throughout the earlier years of his life. He knew and accepted the Lord as his personal Savior. Although he wasn’t a member of a specific congregation, he would attend and support various churches.

Sonny was an avid “arm-chair” athlete. He enjoyed watching his beloved Washington Redskins and Los Angeles Lakers from his favorite recliner. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing basketball, pitching horseshoes and bowling. Sonny could also be found in his recliner watching Channel 6 ABC news, Jerry Springer, and numerous games shows and black and white Westerns.

Sonny leaves to cherish his memory: his devoted wife, Linda; children, Corey Thompson, Lenesha (Obadiah) Knight, and Charlie Thompson, III; his mother, Alberta Thompson; six sisters, Sarah (Ranch) Harris, Lena Thompson, Annie (Freddie) Johnson, Wanda Thompson, Doris Thompson, Margaret (William) Barr; two brothers, James (Michelle) Thompson and Donald (Valerie) Thompson; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Bernice Manlove, John (Ivory) Bostick, Alfonso (Ann) Bostick, Pauline Bostick, Robert Bostick, Randall (Toni) Bostick; grandchildren, Kyree Benson, Kasai Thompson, Tyair Worley, Yaquira Worley, Idearah Blake; special aunt, Annie McClary; devoted cousin, Joe Pressley; longtime friend, Danny Hester, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Lovingly submitted,
