Obituary for Hester Alice Smith (Baynard)

Hester Alice Baynard-Smith was called home to rest on Saturday, January 12, 2019, surrounded by her loving family at Bayhealth Hospital in Milford, DE. She was born in Harrington, DE, on July 18, 1932 to the late Noah and Rachel Baynard. She received her early education at Reaves Crossing School in Felton, DE. When her youngest brother Raymond Baynard Sr. was born in 1943, she lovingly served as his mother figure, helping to raise and care for him.

On March 28, 1964, Hester married the love of her life, James Edward Smith aka “Jim Bob”. She always put her family first and enjoyed their company when visiting. They enjoyed Hester’s cooking, especially her homemade chicken & dumplings and strawberry shortcake. She began her career working at Libby’s Cannery in Houston, Delaware. She then worked at Playtex in Dover, DE, for 18 years, where she retired in the late 80’s. Hester loved her job and her co-workers. She was multitalented and received numerous volunteer awards, serving veterans by donating her time and money to help those in need.

During her free-time, Hester loved going to horse races and the casino, completing her word find puzzles, spending time with her family and friends, helping to organize the family reunions, traveling, serving her church, gardening (special thanks to Tammy & Garnett for keeping the snakes away), going out to dinner, and spending time outdoors. She was a member of Burton Chapel A.M.E. Church in Milton, DE, where she served on the Usher Board. Hester later became a member at St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Harrington, DE.
