Celebrating Noretta

Noretta Brown-Coleman, affectionately known as Nortie, was born on April 20, 1959 to parents, Noah and Marion Brown, in Wilmington, DE. Noretta departed this life on August 10, 2018 in Christiana Hospital surrounded by her loved ones.

Noretta grew up in Wilmington's Riverside neighborhood with her six siblings. She received her education in the Wilmington Public School system, where she graduated from PS DuPont High School. Nortie, as she was known to her family and friends, loved to play double dutch as a child. She was always known to be with Cheryl, Tanya, and Ruth tearing the streets of Wilmington down. Nortie also loved pretending that she and her
sisters were the Supremes.

In 1993 Noretta went on to marry her childhood sweetheart, Steven W. Coleman. From
that union they were blessed with seven children but together raised nine children. Noretta and Steve moved their family to Brookmont Farms in the mid to late 80's. Noretta was a devoted employee of the Hilton Hotel for 17 years. After retiring from the Hilton, she went on to work for Christiana Care, where she worked for over 10 years.

Noretta had a great love of music, which she shared with her husband. Her favorite singers were Luther Vandross and Teena Marie, and her favorite song was Fire and Desire. Nortie loved going out to concerts and dancing. She was known for her black lipstick and spending hours in the mirror. Nort, as she was known by her children, especially Steven, was very family oriented; she loved having family gatherings, where she would just hang with her children and grandchildren. Every weekend she would have a BBQ or some sort of event that brought her family together. She loved taking the children swimming and on vacation. Her favorite holiday was Christmas, she would go all out for her grandchildren. Nort shared a special bond with her granddaughter, Justice, with whom she spent a lot of time. On several occasions Nort would go straight
from work to the hospital to stay by Justice's bedside.

Noretta was preceded in death by her parents, Noah and Marion Brown; brother Noah "Chilli” Wilkerson; sister-in-law Iyoka Coleman; husband Steven W. Coleman Sr., children: Steven L. Brown, Steven W. Coleman Jr. and Shawn Brown; granddaughter Carzh' Lawson.

Noretta leaves to cherish her memory her siblings: Joyce Brown; Cheryl Brown-Stewart (Gary), Karen Wilkerson (Leves), Michael D. Brown (Melissa), Zanthia Benson (James), sister-in-laws: Leslie Wilkerson, Robin Smith, Kenyatta Colon (Jose); brother in-law James Smyre (Annette); devoted friends: Cheryl Robinson, Karen Butler, Tanya Osburn-Poteat and Sophia Johnson; children: Leonard Bethley, Stephanie Brown, Robert Betts, Joyce Dixon, Shylanea Brown, Shardae Brown and Stedman “Boo" Brown; 29 grandchildren, 3 greatgrandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and friends.
