Vernon Antoine Mays , “Gus”, as he was affectionately known by friends and family, departed this life on April 19, 2019.
Vernon was born on May 18, 1963 to Charlie and Clarabelle Mays in Wilmington, Delaware. He attended Shortlidge Public School and graduated from Brandywine High School in 1980. He served in the United States Air Force from 1980 to 1984.
Vernon was employed at Pianes’ Catering, but later found his niche was for baking and enjoyed many years as a baker at Sweets to You by Ginger Bakery in Wilmington, DE. He was widely known for his specialty cakes that brought joy to many occasions. He was a football enthusiast and enjoyed crossword puzzles, word searches and writing poetry. Vernon enjoyed spending time with family and had a special bond with his nephew, Kyron Mays, great-nephew, Ikeem Mays, and the joy of his life, his daughter, Jennifer.
A person of few words, quiet, easy going and loved by everyone he met are but a few characteristics of Vernon. He was willing to help others as much as possible.
Vernon is preceded in death by his parents and a nephew, Jacquez Mays.
Vernon leaves fond memories of him with his daughter, Jenifer Onshae Mays-Breyer (Michael Nathan); sisters, Leola M. Coston (Edmond) of Burgaw, NC., Pauline Edwards of Sacramento, CA., Joanne Mays of Wilmington, DE., and Marie Mays, of Wilmington, DE.; brother, Charles H. Mays (Delores) of Hyattsville, MD.; grandson, Joshua Emory Joel Breyer; nieces, Theresa Edwards and Felicia Mays; nephews, Lamar Edwards, Cecil Edwards, Arte Mays, and Kyron Mays; a host of great-nephews, great-nieces, great-great nieces and great-great nephews, loving Godparents, Lewis & Alma Ross of South Carolina; along with a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
